Occupational License

In Texas, it can be essential to have a valid driver’s license. If you were arrested or convicted of DWI or an intoxication offense, your driver’s license may be suspended for months or even years. In some cases, you may be eligible for an Occupational License that will allow you to drive while your regular license is suspended.

What is an an Occupational License?

An occupational license is a restricted driver’s license that allows you to drive a motor vehicle when your driver’s license has been suspended or revoked. Typically, the occupational license only allows you to drive for certain periods during the day and only for work, school, or household duties.

Will I have to install an interlock device in my vehicle?

It depends. If your license was suspended because of a DWI conviction, Texas law requires you to install an interlock device or blow device in your vehicle before you can obtain an occupational license. However, if your license was suspended due to an ALR or non-DWI-related issue, a blow device may not be required.

How do I obtain an Occupational License?

You cannot simply request an occupational license through Texas Department of Public Safety. Instead, you must file a written petition with a Texas court. And not every court can legally grant you an occupational license, so it is best to contact a lawyer instead of trying to obtain one on your own.
